Bougainvillea Plant Guide
Bougainvillea

Explosive tropical color for walls, fences, and containers. Bougainvillea produces masses of vibrant pink, purple, orange, and red bracts for months.
Quick Facts
Why Grow Bougainvillea
No plant delivers more color per square foot than bougainvillea. When in bloom, the plant is almost entirely covered in vivid papery bracts that last for weeks — the tiny white flowers inside are almost invisible. A bougainvillea cascading over a white wall is the quintessential Mediterranean-tropical image. It's also surprisingly drought-tolerant and nearly pest-free.
Best Varieties
'Barbara Karst' is the classic bright red-magenta. 'Royal Purple' produces deep violet-purple bracts. 'Gold Rush' offers golden-yellow color unusual in climbers. 'Singapore Pink' has soft pastel pink bracts. Dwarf varieties like 'Helen Johnson' and 'Bambino' series stay compact for containers. 'Torch Glow' grows as an upright shrub rather than a vine.
Getting Maximum Blooms
Bougainvillea blooms best when slightly stressed. Full sun is essential — 8+ hours of direct sunlight. Let the soil dry between waterings — overwatering produces leaves at the expense of flowers. Use a low-nitrogen, high-phosphorus fertilizer to promote blooming. Slight root-binding in containers actually encourages heavier flowering.
Growing in Cold Climates
In zones below 9, grow bougainvillea in containers. Use a 14-20 inch pot, place in your sunniest spot, and bring indoors before first frost. Overwinter in a cool, bright room — it may drop leaves but will recover in spring. Treat as a seasonal patio plant: stunning outdoors May through October, dormant indoors over winter.
